No More Greenscreen Paint at Mini-Bar Prices:
Rosco Chroma Key Green, the industry standard greenscreen paint, is priced at a ridiculous $65 per gallon, which means every time you want to go from white cyc to greenscreen on an average sized stage, it costs at least $500 just for the damn paint. After considerable research and testing, I stumbled upon a marvelous little secret… Home Depot’s “Disney Color” paint by Behr...

Production Jargon
Meat-Prop (def) A term used on set to describe background extras in films/tv. The meat prop is a valuable tool in the director’s arsenal. They are easy to come by and cheap. You can easily get away with purchasing a meat prop for fifty dollars.

What is a C47?
The name “C47” may have come from an attempt to make it sound less mundane than a clothes-pin, or it may have come from the label on the bin used to store them in an early studio.  More commonly believed is that the name “C47” came to be the designation that the clothes-pins were given when printed on studio budgets to trick budget managers into approving the request for...

Shooting "Death Race" →
I wanted to get the cars to drive into the cameras at high speeds, so we built one of my favorite rigs. We built a rig that had a camera and was completely ringed with basketballs. So it was this big giant ball. We stick it in the middle of the road, and the cars would drive at it … We killed a lot of cameras in the making of the movie. But no people. Full interview here.

Jack of all trades, master of none. Tonight’s advice is to pick a job and stick with it.  Don’t try and do too much in production.  Find out what you like and stick to it.  Otherwise you’ll just be that asshole on set that thinks they know everything but is just an asshole.

The "Abby Singer" shot
Abner E. “Abby” Singer worked as a production manager and assistant director in film between the 1950s and the 1980s. He is notorious for misleading his crew into thinking that the second-to-last shot of the day was actually the last shot. For this reason, the second-to-last shot of the day on a film set is now called an “Abby Singer.” After this take kids we’ll...

Microsoft shopping for exclusive Zune content →
marco: Microsoft: Hey, can you produce exclusive videos for our Zune owners? Hollywood: Maybe. How many people will we reach? Microsoft: Uh… look! Over there! Something shiny! [runs away] I actually saw that exchange on the way to work.  For some fucking reason, the Microsoft guy was wearing white pants.  He tries too hard.

– ould a Little Indecency Save Network TV? (via rickyv) It’s surprising how taboo some topics “are” to people in America.   The vast, vast majority of Americans wouldn’t care about a lot of things that we pretend to care about.

Let's Do DaVinci
During the 16th century, Da Vinci conceptualized many inventions that now are considered hundreds of years ahead of their time. The master artist’s journals include blueprints of a helicopter, a tank, a calculator and the harvesting of solar power. Most of the designs have never been constructed — until now. “If Da Vinci had at his disposal the tools we have today, would the...
